The Lost Interview: How Greta Thunberg Got A Mural In Fargo

In June 2020 Jason Spiess sat down with Mike Williams about the Greta Thunberg mural which ended up in downtown Fargo. The interview never aired because of the conflicting root view points about the mural, taking away from the information and realites of the context.

The interview details how the artist’s original location for the mural in Bismarck was moved to Fargo by Mike Williams after the business owner and artist received hate messages, death threats and public stoning from the media, politicians, industry leaders and workers.

From newspapers to talk radio to social media posts, there were negative comments slung left right and center.

During the interview Spiess asks Williams about his involvement and how difficult it was to get a mural of Greta Thunberg in Fargo.

“Front Street Tap Room was the first place and people I asked,” Williams said. “We could have had three or four others too.”

Spiess asked about industry, whether the industry leaders or North Dakota Petroleum Council or political leaders have talked to Williams about the mural and it’s political messaging towards industry.

“I haven’t heard anything from oil and gas and I was president of the Renewable Energy Association Partnership for North Dakota,” Williams said.

Williams continued the conversation about his attempts to work with industry and the utilities with the Renewable Energy Association Partnership and their 500-plus members.
