Here are the Special Guest, Industry Experts and Community Leaders in the episode of This Week In Energy for January 11 , 2025:
Christian Wallace is a versatile screenwriter, journalist, and storyteller from West Texas, renowned for his deep insights into American life and culture. Hailing from the small town of Andrews, Texas, Wallace's roots are intertwined with the hardworking ethos of his family, who are cotton farmers, oil field workers, and cowboys. His upbringing in a region shaped by the oil and gas industry provided him with an authentic perspective on the lives and challenges of those connected to the energy sector.
“I grew up in a small town called Andrews. My family are cotton farmers, oil field hands, and working cowboys,” Wallace said.
Wallace pursued higher education with dual BAs in History and English from Texas State University in San Marcos. He further honed his craft by earning a master's degree in writing from the University of Galway in Ireland, combining his passion for history and storytelling into a unique narrative style.
As a journalist, Wallace gained recognition for his work with Texas Monthly and other notable publications, delving into topics ranging from rural culture to the complexities of the energy industry.
“I reported, wrote, and hosted Boomtown, a podcast about the Permian Basin. The series topped the Apple Podcasts chart in the documentary category and has more than five million downloads,” Wallace said. “Taylor Sheridan and I co-created a Paramount+ series loosely based on Boomtown called “Landman”. The show debuted on November 17, 2024.”
His acclaimed Boomtown podcast, which explored the realities of life in oil-boom towns, became a springboard for the creation of the TV series Landman. This Taylor Sheridan-led project brings Wallace's insights to the screen, examining the lives of "landmen" and the nuanced world of big oil.
“Texas Monthly magazine hired me as a fact-checker in 2016. I was later promoted to staff writer and senior editor. During my tenure at “the National Magazine of Texas," I wrote seven cover stories,” Wallace said. “My storytelling has been nominated for three National Magazine Awards, as well as several state and regional awards. My stories have been optioned for Hollywood adaptation by HBO (the high-adrenaline world of oil field medics), Tom Hanks's Playtone (the Jackie Robinson of Rodeo, Myrtis Dightman), and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way (the legendary lawman, Bass Reeves).”
In the interview Wallace also shares some views and insights on the original Paramount + series Landman.
Nate Washburn, Energy Information Administration, gives an update on propane, diesel, gasoline and residential heating prices.
The average retail price for home heating oil rose 8.5 cents from last week to $3.65 per gallon. That's down 30.6 cents from a year ago, based on the residential heating fuel survey by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Heating oil prices in the New England region are at $3.65 per gallon up 9.5 cents from last week, but down 29.5 cents from a year ago.
The average retail price for propane is $2.58 per gallon, up 5.4 cents from last week's price, and up 8.6 cents from a year ago, based on the residential heating fuel survey by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Propane prices in the Midwest region averaged $2.08 per gallon, up 5.4 cents from last week, and up 6.6 cents from a year ago.
The U.S. average retail price for on-highway diesel fuel increased to $3.56 a gallon on Monday. That's up 5.8 cents from a week ago, based on the weekly price survey by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
“New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, an extremist liberal, recently signed a bill into law that bans using carbon dioxide to frack wells in the state (see New York Has Fallen: Gov. Hochul Signs CO2 Frack Ban Into Law),” Jim Willis said. “Her predecessor and boss, Andrew Cuomo, previously outlawed “regular” water-based fracking in early 2020 just as everyone was consumed with the unfolding COVID pandemic (see Cuomo PERMANENTLY Bans NY Fracking in Now-Adopted Budget).”
The owner, editor and writer for the Marcellus Drilling News continued.
“Their combined actions are a gross injustice for landowners and consumers in the state. The Southern Tier region of New York (where MDN editor Jim Willis lives) is economically depressed,” Willis said. “Jonathan Lesser, a senior fellow with the National Center for Energy Analytics and the president of Continental Economics, recently published an article in the New York Post outlining his analysis that Hochul and Cuomo’s actions in banning all fracking in the state have locked away some $1 TRILLION worth of natural gas that sits under our feet.”
Willis ended his summary of what is happening in the Marcellus.
“New York remains closed for business.”
Warren Martin, Kansas Strong, reviews and reacts to the latest episode of Landman, streaming exclusively on Paramount +. Landman is starting to wind down now, and in Episode 9, ‘WolfCamp’, there’s major changes throughout the episode that becomes very heavy for Tommy in the oil patch.
In Landman Episode 8, Monty suffered a huge blow with a heart attack (his fifth one, apparently). Meanwhile, Tommy was still adjusting to the news that Cooper and Ariana were essentially dating, and Ainsley was getting cosy with her new beau, Ryder.
But problems are on the horizon. Rebecca is getting too aggressive for her own good, and the cartel was very much still on Tommy’s case after the plane crash. What’s more, the last Landman episode ended with the National Guard firing on some of their runners by accident.
Episode 9 of Taylor Sheridan‘s drama picks up where we left off, setting everything up for the big finale.
Executive Coach Joe Sinnott, Witting Partners, and the host of The Energy Detox Podcast, asks the question "What does maple syrup, natural gas and leadership have in common?"
Did you know that maple syrup inspired the first commercial natural gas well drilled in the world? [Note: While some point to the Fredonia, NY gas well of the 1820s as the “first commercial natural gas well,” it was actually dug by hand—not drilled. Moreover, the Fredonia well did not produce gas at the scale, volume, or pressure necessary for long-distance transport.]
Did you know that the Haymaker brothers who drilled the well were in search of oil, not gas?
Did you know that there are two cocktails inspired by natural gas that can serve as refreshing reminders of how you can be a more effective leader?
Did you know that attendees of the Women’s Energy Network Shale Insight 2024 Happy Hour had an opportunity to not only enjoy those two cocktails for free, but to also bring home bottles of maple syrup produced in Murrysville, PA—home of the Haymaker well?
Learn all about the connection between maple syrup, natural gas, and energy leadership by checking out Episode 93 of The Energy Detox on YouTube, your favorite podcast app, or right here at MarcellusCocktails.com.
Then keep on scrolling for the ingredients and instructions you can use to mix up a “Catalyst Cocktail” and a “Maple Bourbon Haymaker.”
